Operations and Structure

DFA National Delegates, Senior Representatives and members of the Family Network work in a voluntary capacity, with the full support of the Chief of the Defence Force.

DFA operates on national, regional and local levels. At the national level, the Executive Committee comprises of the National Convenor, the National Communications Officer National Policy Officer, Lateral Recruit Officer, Administration Officer and eight National Delegates representing the following regions:

  • ACT & Southern NSW
  • Central NSW
  • North Queensland
  • South Queensland
  • Victoria & Tasmania
  • Northern Territory & Kimberley
  • South Australia
  • Western Australia & Pilbara

Overseas families are represented by the Convenor.

The National Delegates travel to Canberra each year to meet as an Executive at the DFA Annual National Conference to discuss current priorities affecting Defence families and to be briefed by senior Defence personnel, the CDF, Minister and stakeholder organisations on issues and policies.

The Executive Committee makes recommendations, if required, to the Chief of Defence Force, the Department of Defence and the Minister.

In recent years the National Delegates have traveled to Canberra for a week of training providing delegates with the opportunity to develop their professional skills and better understand the environment within which Defence operates.
