Aussie Hero Quilts (and Laundry Bags) is a volunteer organisation that encourages people all around Australia to make quilts and laundry bags to send to our military serving members currently involved in Operation Slipper in the Middle East and Operation Mazurka in the Sinai. This includes personnel in Afghanistan, Dubai, Egypt and on board HMAS ANZAC.
The response to these items in the 8 months that we have been up and running has been absolutely humbling. It is not the fact that we are sending them a practical and useful item. What seems to mean the most to those who receive our gifts is that someone they don’t know has taken the time to make something special for them. When I started this I had no way of knowing the depth of feeling these quilts engender in their new owners. They absolutely treasure them!
Quilts and laundry bags are largely sent as the result of special requests made by either the serving member or their loved ones. With quilters and sewers all over the country we are able to send parcels free of charge using the AFPO boxes and the member’s postal details.
What we need are more quilters and sewers to get involved so that we can send even more. In the last 8 months over 460 quilts have been sent and even more laundry bags.
If you would like to join in the fun and help us make life a little happier for those wonderful heroes please get in touch. If you can’t quilt or sew there are lots of other ways you can help out.
