Child Support

Making Child Support Payments as a Defence Family

Serving in the ADF presents separated parents with some unique challenges. The Child Support Agency (CSA) has recognised these issues and is working with Defence and Defence Families of Australia to find solutions so separated parents can ensure their children receive the right amount of child support.

For parents in constantly changing circumstances, such as those serving in the ADF, CSA encourages ‘private collect’ arrangements because they are flexible and allow parents to work out payment arrangements that best suit them and their children. Private collect allows parents to manage the transfer of child support payment themselves without CSA intervention.

There can also be financial issues around tax-free payments, which are not taken into account under the child support formula.

In special circumstances parents may also be able to apply for a Change of Assessment (COA). The most common are when there’s a significant change in income, property, financial resources or the earning capacity of a parent, such as a sudden or unexpected deployment or posting.

COA is a more complex process that can take some time, so it’s important that you call CSA first before you apply, as a simpler option may be available.
