Moving Overview

Have You Been Posted?

The Department of Defence sets the policy in relation to the housing and relocation of ADF members and manages the contractors who provide these services.

Toll Transitions have been appointed to provide Defence families with a total relocation service. Defence Housing Australia (DHA) provides housing for Defence Families and offers support throughout your tenancy.

The following information is designed to help you through the relocation process, and to help you settle into your new home.

Receiving your Posting Order

Toll Transitions will assist with coordinating your relocation requirements including:

  • Booking your travel and temporary accommodation
  • Arranging your uplift and delivery of household goods and personal effects
  • Organising long or short term storage
  • Arranging your entitlements and allowances
  • Notifying Defence Housing Australia (DHA) of your intention to relocate, so that they can commence your Homefind and vacation process (if applicable).

Complete AFR

You can complete your Application for Relocation (AFR) online via the Relocation section of the Toll Transitions website. The information you provide in the AFR will allow a Toll Transitions Case Manager to process and manage your relocation, including; removal, temporary accommodation, travel and allowances.

AFRs completed online will be provided to the Toll Transitions RSC in your losing locality.

Alternatively - you can download the AFR Form or complete the AFR in the Relocation Guide provided in the Relocation Pack which has been sent to you or can be viewed online by clicking here. If you choose to complete the paper AFR, please return it to the Toll Transitions RSC in your losing locality as soon as possible.

Finding Your Next House

For ADF members with dependants, Defence Housing Australia's online home search facility, Homefind, can help you with selecting your new home.

Early viewing on HomeFind is available (via a Preview Pin) to members who submit a Pre-AFR. When Toll receives the AFR and advises DHA, full access to HomeFind will be granted.

HomeFind enables members and their families to view houses that are within their housing entitlement in the new posting location. Details about the property may include:

  • photos;
  • floor plans;
  • maps of the area, detailing schools, hospitals and other facilities;
  • full property description including details of the internal fittings; and
  • local region information (e.g. climate).

If you are entitled to a four bedroom house, you may need to talk to your Property Manager about those properties, rather than only looking on Homefind.

When you find a suitable housing solution, reserve it immediately using the HomeFind Lockdown feature.

For single ADF members, DHA will facilitate the location of appropriate housing on-base or available alternatives.

Complete inventory

You can enter your Inventory online on the Toll Transitions website or complete and return the inventory form provided in the Relocation Guide located in the Removals section.

Fast Connect is a free service to connect and disconnect home telephone, electricity, gas, internet and pay TV when you relocate.

Australia Post Moving Services provide mail redirection, change of address notification and link to Fast Connect utility transfer services.

Allowances, Travel and Accomodation

As a Defence Family, you are entitled to a number of allowances and entitlements as a result of a new posting or relocation. These allowances and entitlements vary according to a variety of factors, for example: the member's rank, family size and posting location.

Toll Transitions will calculate all the allowances applicable for your relocation including (but not limited to): Disturbance, Temporary Accommodation and Vehicle allowances. Toll will also co-ordinate your travel and temporary accommodation and facilitate reimbursement of any relocation entitlements.

For detailed information regarding your entitlements refer to the Defence Pay and Conditions Manual (PACMAN).

  • Travel bookings;
  • Temporary Accommodation arrangements;
  • Uplift and delivery of your furniture and personal effects; and
  • Allowances.
